How to reach Hvar?

Many tourists have problem to find right way to come to Hvar. When I write right way, I mean right way for them, it depends are they coming with car or not. So here I will make little summary of all ways you can reach Hvar. So, let start!

  1. Car ferry from Split harbor.
  2. Passengers catamarans a high speed ships.
  3. Car ferry from Makarska Riviera – Drvenik – Sucuraj (Hvar island) – Drvenik.
  4. International line from Italy – Ancona – Stari Grad (Hvar island) – Split.
  5. High speed sailboats from Split airport or town.

To make it as simple as possible we will divide in three categories:

  1. With car
  2. Only passengers
  3. International

Arriving with car

If you are going to spend your holidays on Hvar with car there are two ways you can reach Hvar town. First one is from Split harbor. From there you can take ferry to Stari Grad, Hvar and from there you drive to Hvar town. Drive takes 1 hour and 40 minutes and then from Stari Grad to Hvar town 20 minutes driving with car. Ferries drive in winter time 3 times a day, and in season up to six times. For passengers without car there is no seat limitation however for those with car in season can be crowded.

There is also possibility to go to Drvenik (near Makarska) and take ferry to Sućuraj. Ferry drive is only 30 minutes however since Sućuraj is on opposite side from Hvar town you have 2 hours car drive. Bright side is if you are coming during day you can see whole island Hvar in one drive 😊

Passengers catamaran

If you are arriving with car there are more option of transportation. Firstly, you can go with public transportation or private. Private transportation includes highspeed boats that can take you from your location to your destination no matter where you are, however it will cost you much more then public transportation, and also it is faster but more uncomfortable since it is open speed boat.

Public transportation can be divided depending where are you located and where you want to go. Directly to Hvar town you can go from Split harbor and these catamaran lines in season drive very often. If you are going to Jelsa on Hvar you can also take catamaran from Split harbor or even catamaran from Makarska. Also, in high season there is catamaran from Dubrovnik to Hvar and reverse. Duration is three hours but is saves lots of time. Catamarans from Split or Makarska take one hour of driving.

International

If you are coming from Italy, then we have good news since there is also direct line from Ancona to Stari Grad (Hvar). These line operates only in season and you can take it with car or without.

Hope these information will be at use for anybody that is planning their trip to Hvar 😊

How to become a volunteer on Hvar island

How to become a volunteer on Hvar island

Without a doubt, the Hvar island is one of those places that is worth seeing and which can offer a lot to even the most demanding of you. Breathtaking landscape, crystal clear sea, sun (lots of sun), delicious food, open people, fantastic atmosphere – these are just some of the factors that encourage people to come and visit Hvar island. What if we would like to stay on the island a little bit longer and cannot afford a longer stay? Or if we would like to help someone, gather new experiences, learn about the local culture, language and customs? Volunteer programs go with help.

Is it complicated to become a volunteer on Hvar island?

Becoming a volunteer on Hvar island may sound complicated, but in reality it’s very simple. Why? There are a lot of places where people are looking for some helping hands especially during the high season, but also before the season begins or when the season ends. All you have to do is to create an account on one of the volunteer sites (www.workaway.com or www.worldpackers.com), write something about you, your hobbies, maybe add some pictures of you and look for perfect volunteer opportunities for you. After that, the only thing you have to do is to contact the person, which is looking for volunteers, and let him/her know why you are a suitable candidate. On both websites you will find information about volunteering period, place you will be a volunteer, the tasks you must deal with when you decide to be a volunteer. You will also find information about hosts and payments because some of volunteering locations offer extra payment for some extra work. You have a wide range of possibilities, from working in a hostel or restaurant, to gardening or construction work, to harvesting grapes and olives, producing wine or olive oil. These two websites are very easy-to-use, clear and intuitive, so you’ll have no problem with operating your profile on these sites.

What have l learned through volunteering on Hvar island?

Because that’s how I started my adventure on Hvar island (I came as a volunteer in September 2019), I can tell you more about volunteering here on Hvar island from my own experience and perspective. First, I can’t count how much I’ve learned through volunteering and how many extraordinary people I’ve met. Volunteering on the Hvar island enabled me to learn about Croatian culture. Now I know how “pomalo pomalo” works and I started to live this way too. Secondly, volunteering has shown me that you can work harder than before and be happier and more satisfied. I could experience on my own that people really are working here hard, especially during the season, so that I had respect for every job, and I wasn’t afraid of any work either. Thirdly, volunteering gives you the opportunity to get to know a country, its people, its cuisine, taste dishes, vegetables, fruits that you won’t eat anywhere else, see plants that may not be in your home country.

To sum up, I came to Hvar’s island for a week’s volunteer work and I’ve stayed until today. I felt in love with the landscape and people here so much that I decided to stay longer. I recommend volunteering to everyone because it shows you how to see the world in a different way, broadens horizons, opens to new things and new people.

Christmas on the island Hvar

The most joyous holiday is approaching … as everywhere else, Christmas is really special on the island. The lights are on, the Christmas tree is ready and lots of fun at the little Christmas houses in the center of town. Imagine a Christmas magic without big crowds, without traffic jams and similar situations. If you want a relaxed and magical Christmas then Christmas on the island is the solution.

Christmas on the island Hvar

The end of summer and the beginning of winter on the island

Hvar is known for summer, many tourists who visit it, luxury yachts in the harbor and many cultural sights, but Hvar has its charms in winter. When ferries stop driving every hour or two, when whether gets bad, these few catamarans, and sometimes even ferries, stay at port in Split. When music is no longer heard in the city and many restaurants and caffe bars close their doors, then the island and all its beauty are experienced. There are no strangers on the streets anymore, no English is heard on every corner, no flashing lights … just a couple of outdoor caffe shops and locals in their winter daily routines. In the winter, everyone is more relaxed, more often engaging in small conversations with each other, recounting their experiences and impressions from last season, and planning their own trips and vacations.

How is Christmas celebrated on the island of Hvar?

As with any city, decorations are ready, the Christmas tree in the square is decorated and ready to be the main symbol of Christmas on the island. but the difference between Christmas in small towns versus big cities is obvious. In Hvar we do not have dozens of Christmas houses, but only three, the streets are not full of visitors looking for a warm place to have a drink or eat something delicious. Mostly everybody is familiar to each other, and you say hello to everybody you encounter. The atmosphere in the city versus the big cities is more family friendly, safer and warmer … it may not have the amenities and fun like in bigger cities, but there is some warmth that cannot be experienced anywhere but on an island in winter. If you want to see “new” faces then just head to another city on the island … the atmosphere is the same, but at least there are different people. Now let’s get back to the topic of this blog … Christmas on the island … Along with the already mentioned Christmas houses, which have already become a symbol of Advent, Christmas is felt on the streets, the city is being decorated, every day we get a new decoration …. people are gathering more and more, making suggestions for decorating, arranging dinners and other social meetings, and planning a Christmas Eve. We don’t have much choice here on the island, either we stay at home, in a fireplace with a select company or out in the city, and most often it is a combination of both. In addition to Christmas Eve, in recent years there will also have a program throughout December where something can be found for everybody. For the youngest, the program runs during the day, and for those a little older in the evening. So, this year, various workshops and performances are organized for children, where the youngest can express their creativity and enrich their cultural knowledge, since frankly in other parts of the year there is a lack of it in Hvar.

And what about after Christmas on the island?

As every year, Christmas comes and goes … only good memories of getting together and many retelling of various events remain. After Christmas on the island, the notion of winter on Hvar gets its full potential …. the decorations are taken off … the locals no longer meet on the waterfront … only then does the winter on the island takes full potencial. Even then, stories and preparations for the coming season begin … and a few more months of the deserted island until it is filled with many tourists, busy workers and luxury yachts …. The season will come and go and Christmas will live on the island again and bring many hidden joys that cannot be described on a few pages of text … you can only feel it … if you ever have the opportunity to visit Hvar in winter.

Until then, I have attached a few Christmas photos below and wish you all a Merry Christmas.
